Bahrain Probation Period Rules 2026: Length, Notice & What's Owed
→ Open the Bahrain Probation Period Calculator
Bahrain's Labour Law No. 36 of 2012 sets out clear rules for probationary employment — and the notice period during probation is much shorter than most people expect.
How long can probation last?
Probation must be agreed in writing and cannot exceed 3 months. The Ministry can extend this to 6 months by decision, but only for specified occupations — it isn't a general employer option. Critically, a given employer can only place you on probation once; you cannot be re-probated by the same company later.
The notice period is very short
Under Article 21, either the employer or the employee can end the employment during probation without giving any reason, as long as at least 1 day's notice is given. This is one of the shortest statutory probation-notice periods in the Gulf. That said, it's a floor, not a ceiling — your employment contract may (and often does) specify a longer notice period, so always check your own contract.
What about gratuity?
Bahrain's gratuity provision (Article 116) does not carve out an explicit probation exclusion the way some other jurisdictions do — it's generally driven by your total length of service (see our Bahrain Leaving Indemnity Calculator). In practice, a probation period lasting only weeks accrues a very small amount, but the law does not state you get precisely zero.
Worked example
You're on BHD 400/month and your employer ends your employment 6 weeks into a 3-month probation. Daily wage = 400 ÷ 30 = BHD 13.3. If paid in lieu of the 1-day statutory notice, that's about BHD 13.3 — though your actual contract notice period may be longer.
Frequently asked questions
How long can probation last in Bahrain?
Up to 3 months, extendable to 6 months only by a Ministerial decision for specified occupations. You can only be placed on probation once with the same employer.
How much notice is needed to end employment during Bahrain probation?
At least 1 day, from either the employer or the employee, without needing to state a reason — per Article 21 of Labour Law No. 36/2012. Many contracts specify a longer notice period than this legal minimum.
Do I get gratuity if terminated during probation in Bahrain?
The law does not contain an explicit probation-specific gratuity exclusion — gratuity (Article 116) is generally tied to your total length of service. In practice, very short probation periods rarely accrue a meaningful amount; check our Bahrain Leaving Indemnity Calculator for the general formula.
Can I be placed on probation more than once by the same employer?
No — Bahrain law allows only one probationary period per employer for the same worker.
