ILOE is cheap and useful, but claims fail for avoidable reasons. Here are the pitfalls and the facts.
Mistake 1 — Missing the 30-day claim window
You must file within 30 days of your employment ending. Miss it and the claim can be rejected outright, however valid it otherwise was.
Mistake 2 — Assuming resignation is covered
It is not. ILOE pays only for involuntary job loss. Resigning, or being dismissed for disciplinary reasons or gross misconduct, is excluded.
Mistake 3 — Claiming before 12 months of premiums
You need at least 12 consecutive months of paid subscription before you can claim. A brand-new subscriber cannot claim yet, even after an involuntary loss.
Mistake 4 — Forgetting the payout is capped
The benefit is 60% of basic, but capped at AED 10,000 (Category A) or AED 20,000 (Category B) per month. High earners will not receive a full 60%.
Mistake 5 — Overlooking the lifetime aggregate
Across your whole UAE career, total ILOE payouts cannot exceed 12 monthly benefits combined, across any number of claims.
Mistake 6 — Confusing ILOE with gratuity
They are separate systems. ILOE is government insurance funded by your premium; gratuity is an employer benefit based on service. You may be entitled to both — do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
Keeping your claim eligible
Two administrative slips sink otherwise-valid claims. The first is letting premiums lapse: more than three months unpaid can cancel your subscription and reset the 12-month qualifying period, so a single missed direct debit can cost you the whole safety net. The second is misjudging "involuntary." A negotiated exit or a mutual settlement can be argued either way, and a resignation — however reluctant — is excluded. If you are being let go, make sure your paperwork records the loss as involuntary redundancy or termination without cause, because that classification is what the scheme checks.
