How to Calculate Oman Probation Notice Pay: A Worked Example

Work out what is owed when an Oman probation ends early, using the 7-day notice and the daily-wage method.

Ending an Oman probation early is a simple daily-wage calculation against a short, 7-day notice. Here is the method with worked figures and a table.

Step 1 — Confirm the notice you owe

Under Article 37 of Royal Decree 53/2023, either party can end probation with at least 7 days' notice. Check your contract for anything longer, and use whichever is greater.

Step 2 — Work out the daily wage

Divide the monthly wage by 30: daily = wage ÷ 30. On OMR 500 a month, that is OMR 16.67 per day.

Step 3 — Multiply by the notice days

Multiply the daily wage by the notice days being paid in lieu (at least 7). The standard example — OMR 500/month, 7-day notice in lieu:

Remember: probation counts toward service

Unlike a throwaway trial, a completed Oman probation counts toward your total length of service, which feeds into your eventual gratuity. Even if you leave during probation, you should still receive salary up to your last day and any accrued unused leave.

Probation vs confirmed notice

The jump is significant: 7 days during probation versus 30 days for a monthly-paid unlimited contract once confirmed (see the Oman notice period guide). For scenarios, read the Oman probation FAQ or the complete probation guide.

Using the correct notice

The statutory floor is 7 days, but your contract may set a longer probation notice; apply whichever is greater. On a OMR 500 wage, 7 days in lieu is about OMR 116.67, while a contractual 14-day notice would be about OMR 233.33. Always check the contract before assuming the 7-day minimum applies.

What else you are owed

Leaving during probation still entitles you to salary up to your last day and any accrued unused leave. And because a completed probation counts toward service, the months you did work are not lost for gratuity purposes if you stay and later leave. A short probation exit is mostly a notice-pay calculation plus salary and accrued leave to date.

Glossary

Article 37 — the provision setting probation length and the 7-day notice under Royal Decree 53/2023. Royal Decree 35/2003 — the old, now-repealed Labour Law. Length of service — the total continuous service that drives gratuity, which a completed probation counts toward. Paid otherwise — workers paid on a basis other than monthly (e.g. daily or piece-rate).

The bottom line

Probation notice pay is a daily-wage sum against at least 7 days (or your contract's longer figure). Add salary to date and accrued leave, and remember the completed probation still counts toward the service that drives gratuity.

Before you calculate

The worked examples above use tidy round numbers. To apply the method to your real figures, make sure you have the right inputs to hand.

What you'll need to run the numbers

For an Oman probation exit, you need your monthly wage, your pay basis (monthly sets a 3-month cap, otherwise 2 months), and your contract's probation notice (at least 7 days). The contract and your pay records confirm all three. Remember that a completed probation counts toward your total service.

When to get professional advice

Consider advice if your pay-basis classification is disputed (it changes the probation cap), if a second probation is attempted, or if probation service is being excluded from your length-of-service for gratuity. The default rules — Article 37's caps, one probation, 7-day notice, service continuity — are your reference, and the calculator handles the notice pay.
